Volunteering for the World Menstrual Hygiene Day outreach at the Femi Olutoye Foundation (FOF) was an enriching experience and marked my first involvement in volunteer service. I am truly grateful that I had the opportunity to participate.
On May 28, 2025, our team departed from Osogbo and traveled to Goodwill Group of Schools in Obaagun, Ikirun, for a school health program organized by the Femi Olutoye Foundation. The outreach focused on educating young girls about proper menstrual hygiene practices and breaking the stigma associated with menstruation.
Prior to the event, I attended a webinar hosted by the Foundation. It was an enlightening session that deepened my understanding of menstrual hygiene and underscored the significance of the outreach. The knowledge gained provided clarity and confidence as we prepared to engage the students.
Upon arriving at the school, we were warmly received by the students and staff. The speakers delivered their presentations clearly and patiently, using simple language and maintaining an engaging atmosphere throughout.
During the session, I sat with the students, encouraged them to listen attentively, and responded to some of their questions. It was heartening to see them shift from being shy and reserved to becoming enthusiastic, participative, and genuinely interested. I also supported the session by holding up educational charts and explaining their content to small groups of students.
After the talk, we distributed menstrual hygiene packs and other essential items generously provided by the Foundation. We also took photographs with some of the students and teachers to commemorate the day.
The outreach included a health screening for the teachers, which involved blood pressure and blood sugar checks, along with opportunities to consult health professionals regarding any concerns.
Overall, the experience was inspiring and impactful. Although I was initially nervous, I quickly felt at ease. The journey was smooth, the environment was welcoming, and I had the privilege of working alongside dedicated volunteers who shared a commitment to creating positive change.
This experience ignited a strong desire within me to continue serving, educating, and contributing to meaningful causes. I am thankful to the Femi Olutoye Foundation for the opportunity to be part of such an important initiative.
